Shaker Heights High School
The school supports the team with significant funding for coaching, insurance, boathouse fees, regatta fees, uniforms, transportation to and from practice and regattas, and more. The school also contributes to the team’s capital needs with rowing and safety equipment. The school gets a fee per athlete to pay for hotels when the team travels, as well as ancillary equipment and expenses. Shaker Heights HS Crew Parents, Inc. collects this fee and passes it on to the athletic department.
Shaker Heights HS Crew Parents, Inc.
The costs to operate a team exceed what the school can provide so Shaker Heights HS Crew Parents, Inc. is a 501(c)3 that exists to help organize activities and cover additional costs with dues. The "Org Fee" pays for food while traveling for competitions, for team events, as well as overhead costs to run as a 501(c)3 organization. We collect ONE FEE from families, and keep our portion while passing on the portion for hotel costs to the athletic department.
What it covers:
- Stipends for assistant coaches
- Hotel rooms for athletes and coaches
- Ancillary equipment and expenses
- Travel expenses: team dinners while traveling, gas for chuckwagon driver & supplies for team tent
- Overhead cost for team and org expenses - approximately $10 per athlete
How to pay: You will be sent an invoice from the Org’s treasurer to pay online. You can pay in installments, with the first 50% payment due our first regatta.
Org fees must be paid in full before the final regatta.
If you need assistance with the fees, there are several external grants and scholarships you can apply for and there may be internal scholarship money available.
If cost is a barrier, we are committed to working with you to alleviate the financial burden. We will do everything we can to make Raider Rowing accessible to everyone who wants to row. If families have questions or concerns about payments, they are encouraged to contact the board president ASAP. Please do not let failure to pay jeopardize your eligibility to compete.
Other Potential Costs - Paid Separately
We ask families to contribute food for most regattas. Expect to spend about $15-30 per regatta.
Every athlete needs to be a member of US Rowing, which costs $25 annually.
Families are responsible for buying appropriate practice gear.
If your school-issued racing uni needs to be replaced, the cost is your responsibility.
If your athlete is selected to attend a regatta outside our normal schedule, there will be additional travel costs. The cost for these trips is usually around $300-350 (partial financial aid may be available).
After two seasons of racing, athletes have the option to buy a Shaker Stevenson splash jacket at their own expense. These are Gore-tex jackets that can be worn in the boat (alumni report they still wear these 10+ years later!). Cost is approximately $250.
All athletes are expected to participate in our annual spring-season erg-a-thon by asking friends and family to support the team. The goal for each athlete is to raise $300 or more. These funds are used for large equipment purchases for the team.
